Living Design

At Perkins&Will we take a holistic approach to thoughtful design and development that we refer to as Living Design. This approach aims to address inclusion, resilience, sustainability, regeneration, and well-being in combination for all projects.

Sustainability and innovation are key tenets of this design philosophy – developing not just technology but using a data rich process that always keeps the focus on the people that use our buildings and the environment at large. This creates designs that are rooted in meaning, purpose, and performance.

Mass timber’s greatest impact can be seen in the material’s contribution to decarbonization for new development, which touches on almost all aspects of Living Design. The most acute global need right now is proactive response to addressing climate change through thoughtful and innovative design. This design process must consider the carbon cycle, management of natural resources, global supply chains, and how all of this impacts embodied and operational carbon for new development.

With just 1°C of warming, we are already experiencing dramatic climate change impacts.
